What do I need to know before contacting National Office to print/design for me?
1) Quantity
2) Paper Stock: Uncoated papers, are mainly used for printed pieces that include a registration form.
3) Measurements: For example, if you would like a birthday card designed, we need to know what the measurements are to be sure that they fit into the proper envelopes.
4) Color Preference: A full color job is more costly than a black & white, 2 or 3 color job.
What is involved in the printing process?
1) Receive instructions for the job: Including any files that may be needed (photos, text)
2) Design and layout: Ddepending on the job and time in between communications (emails, phone calls), this can take anywhere from 1 - 5 days to design a newsletter, brochure, pamphlet...etc. A newsletter should take 2-3 days between the time we receive ALL the files and when we send it off (see next point).
3) Plate making & Printing: In order to print this piece, Fred uses our new Jetplate system to burn a plate directly from the file. When the plate is attached to the press, the ink sticks to the raised parts of it and transfers the images and text to the paper. Generally, there are anywhere from 1 - 4 plates per page.
What do I need to know before sending a photo or text file?
1) Acceptable file extensions for photos: jpeg, tiff, eps
- DO NOT send a text file (Word Document) with a photo in it. Word is primarily a text program, as soon as you put a photo in it, the photo loses ALL print quality.
- The original file must be sent to ensure print quality. This means the file that comes directly from your camera. Please DO NOT crop or size them.
- Do not change a file extension manually. For example: If you have sent "picture.png" and the designer requests a jpeg file. Do not change it by clicking on the file name and changing it to "picture.jpeg". The reason why a jpeg is requested is because it it a better quality file for print. Changing the name manually doesn't add quality to the file, it only changes the name.
2) Text Files: Word Document or body of an email.
3) Acceptable file formats for a job that has been designed already (needs to be checked to make sure it won't be a problem for the imaging process): pdf, InDesign, Publisher document (in some cases, these files need to be laid out in a more equipment friendly program, to ensure there are no issues during the plate making process).
